This app displays a list of products (in our use case: mobile devices running different operating systems, i.e. iOS, Android, Windows 8). As the user walks in the proximity of a beacon, the products associated to this beacon will be highlighted in the product list. The user can view product details and can also see which of his Facebook-friends could advise him on the product he is interested in. When it comes to getting recommendations, consumers prefer to rely on the advice from people they’re acquainted with, especially before buying expensive electronic products.
We’ve been creating prototypes that include geofencing for quite some time, but the iBeacon technology has taken our ideas around this topic to a whole new level. Previously, it was merely possible to know if a smartphone is inside a store. iBeacon allows us to narrow the geofence down to a radius of about only one meter. This means we can now tell exactly if a customer is in the men’s section of a boutique or in the female section. The possibilities to mash this up are almost endless – just think of coupons, product information or in-store analytics.
